Cause Detail

Rush academy started when Lucy introduced us to about 200 needy children who would
benefit from sponsorship to go to school. Unfortunately this was not a possibility at the
time but Lucy and Andrew pressed on and started the kindergarten. Here, about 48
children mostly grandchildren of the Rush widows group attended daily and the Rush
School began

A building was rented and each year another class added. Lucy and Andrew became the
Patrons and Bridget a retired Head Teacher and Teacher Trainer became our
Headmistress. The time came when the four classrooms were full and we needed to
acquire a piece of land and build our own school.
After much fundraising in the UK, land was bought on the other side of town where the
school now exists. A very large empty field where locals walked through, often with their
cattle. Foundations were dug for the first four classrooms with the Rush volunteers and a
group from Emmanuel International working together. Once built the school transferred
from across town and very serious fundraising began. The staffroom was a few seats
under a tree.
Each year when the class moved up a new classroom had to be built. At this time it was
realised that with donations coming in, it would be sensible to benefit from Gift Aid. As a
result of the work of a small group of teachers from the UK, RUSH UK was born as a
recognised charity in 2006.
One young student in the UK with his own story to tell fundraised to build the now much
used Administration Block and at last teachers had somewhere to sit out of the sun. Lucys
teacher from her schooldays had retired and became our Head Teacher keeping the
educational standards of the school high
